Volunteer at Our House

Giving is as unique as the individual. Your gifts of time, money, talents and household items are vital. Your support provides housing, food, clothing and education for the homeless men, women and children staying in our shelters.

You can help in many ways. Read through the following volunteer opportunities, then submit a completed volunteer application. You may also call Ron at 374-7383 ext. 218 or email us at ron@ourhouseshelter.org. Be sure to tell us what opportunity you are interested in and what kind of time commitment you can make.

Share Your Special Skills and Talents (Top )

Are you a social worker or therapist? Provide support to our clients by offering group sessions, parenting classes, life skills workshops or play therapy for the children. Do you cut hair? Help fulfill our residents' basic medical and dental needs.

Provide Transportation (Top )

Help a resident get to work, go to a job interview, or make it to a doctor's appointment.

Conduct a Food and Supplies Drive (Top )

An empty roll is a big issue. Toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies are always needed. Also perishable foods like eggs, milk and meats are usually hard for Our House to afford. Instead of a canned food drive, do something different: ask for toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, 409, laundry detergent and other day-to-day items. Local food pantries provide Our House with canned food--but no one provides cleaning items. You can help us in this way! Please contact us before doing this to find out how we can help!!
Time: 2 - 10 hours
Cost: $0

Host a Fundraising Event to Benefit Our House (Top )

Big or small, every little bit helps. Is your organization looking for a group to support? Be our patron! Do you want to do something as an individual? Host a party at your house to benefit Our House. We've had people do benefit birthday parties and "Girls-Night-In" events. It's fun for a good cause. Our House also hosts two large events each year. We're always looking for volunteers to help plan and organize these events. Planning for the June event begins in January and planning for the December event begins in September.
Time: 2 - 10 hours
Cost: $0 - $100

Serve a Meal (Top )

Our House provides a free breakfast, lunch and dinner to every resident, every day, 364 days a year. For 18 years, this has been possible thanks to the churches, synagogues, business groups, and families who cook dinner and serve it to our residents every night at 6:00 pm. Cook a meal in our new, fully-equipped Shelter kitchen or make the food at home and bring it potluck-style. Feed 60 homeless people a nutritious meal. Nourish the hungry in your own community. Come just one time or come every month--it's up to you. Most groups consist of 4 to 8 people. For more information on being one of our dinner servers please contact Lynn at 374-7383 x200 or lynn@ourhouseshelter.org.
Time: 4 hours for food preparation and serving dinner. Our residents clean up so you don't have to.
Cost: Approximately $200 total for food and drinks. Most groups share the cost among participants.

Create Your Own Volunteer Opportunity (Top )

If you would like to help out in another way, we will work with you to provide a fulfilling and enjoyable volunteer experience. Volunteers have put together parties for the kids' birthdays and holidays, read to the children, taken the kids on field trips, and organized donated clothing. Choirs have sung to our residents and actors have provided theater classes.
Time: It's up to you.
Cost: $0
