room to grow
Our House has broken ground on our biggest and most exciting capital project. The Our House Children’s Center is the result of years of strategic planning on the part of our board, staff, clients, and other stakeholders. The Children’s Center will more than triple our daily capacity to serve children in our licensed child development center and out-of-school-time youth programs, from 47/day in our current facility to 142/day in the new building. This additional capacity will enable us to better meet the existing and projected demand among homeless families (lack of space in our children’s programs, rather than in our housing programs, is our current biggest barrier to serving homeless families). We will also be able to serve more children from near-homeless families participating in the CAFSI program.
The new Children’s Center, in conjunction with the expanded Adult Learning Center that will be made possible when the children’s programs move out of their current shared space, will be a dynamic hub of empowerment programming for low-income families. It will enable us to serve more families in a more efficient manner (by serving families before they become homeless rather than providing housing to them while homeless). It will also open up new funding opportunities, as we have higher-quality, more flexible space that will enable us to pursue funding opportunities that have previously been out of our reach.
Construction of the Children’s Center began in June 2013 and will be complete in May 2014.
