The Shelter

Our House provides food, shelter, and basic services as well as resources and programs to lift people out of homelessness once and for all. With 80 beds, the Main Shelter includes two large dormitories: one for men and one for women and children. The shelter also includes free laundry facilities, a dining area, a common room, and a commercial kitchen. Outside the women and children's dorm is a large playground and family area.

For many years, the Shelter was located on Main Street, at a location separate from the rest of the Our House campus. In December 2005, Our House closed the Main Street operation and opened a much larger, improved facility on the Roosevelt Campus. This new Shelter has twice as many beds as the shelter on Main Street and allows the children to have a safe place to play outside on the grounds of the campus and on the playground in the new shelter's back yard. The new shelter was a significant investment, for which we are thankful to the many donors who contributed to the Capital Campaign. This campaign is still underway. To contribute, please click here.

Services provided in the Main Shelter include:

  • 80 Beds: For individuals and families - men, women and children
  • 3 Nutritious Meals per day
  • Basic Needs: Upon entry residents are provided with hygiene items, clothes and linens; children are given clothes and supplies for school
  • Case Management: Residents receive consultation, group sessions and referrals to other partnering programs
  • Job Search Support: All adult residents are required to find a full-time job within 14 days of entry into the shelter—Our House provides leads and resources to residents during their job search
  • Savings Program: All residents are required to save 75% of their income while residing at Our House. This enables residents to leave with enough money in savings to put a deposit on a rental unit or even to put a down payment on a home.
  • Library for adults, to encourage literacy.
  • Children's Play Room and Library
  • Free Laundry for all residents: washers, driers, and laundry detergent provided
  • AA/Substance Abuse Recovery Programs provided on-site
  • Outdoor Recreational Area and Playground: A place where families and individuals can relax in a safe, constructive environment after a day of work or school
  • School Placement: Our House ensures that all children are enrolled in and attending school and that they have the supplies, clothing, tutoring, and special assistance that they need. Our House has well-developed relationships with both the Little Rock and North Little Rock School Districts.
  • Children's Programs: Our House staff and volunteers make sure that the homeless children who live in the Shelter have the best childhoods possible. In the summer, Our House enrolls the children in summer camps. Birthdays and holidays are celebrated, and parents are given gifts to give to their children.
