Job Training

On the Job: Hands-on Skills Training

Our House’s job training program offers hands-on experience in four specific career fields: security, child care, administrative work, and housekeeping. Job trainees learn and practice the skills associated with one of these four career fields in internships on the campus of Our House. The future addition of a formalized training component taught by local employers will transform the experience into a full-fledged vocational training program, and will strengthen the connection between job skills development and potential future employment for program participants.

JobWorks: An Intensive Career-Readiness Training Program (in development)

As a shelter for the working homeless, Our House requires its residents to find full-time employment within their first 16 days at the shelter. This requirement ensures that the homeless individuals and families who stay at the shelter are serious about finding employment, but it also prevents residents from focusing on the development of workforce and education skills.  This hands-on, intensive career readiness training program will temporarily remove the tension between finding full-time employment and pursuing education opportunities by allowing the motivated and committed individuals who are accepted to the program to spend a month and a half developing their workforce skills and applying these skills to finding suitable employment.

Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE): A Job Readiness Certification Program

This job training program was designed by Arkansas employers and Arkansas Adult Education. The program was designed by Arkansas employers and Adult Education. The program takes a holistic approach to workforce cultivation by developing basic education skills, computer literacy, and job search experience, WAGE offers three state-issued certificates: the Employability Certificate, the Clerical Certificate, and the Industrial Certificate. Each is based on the mastery of critical skills identified by Arkansas employers. Click here for more information.
