Our House Wraps-up Housing Program

  For the past 18 months, Our House has managed a federal stimulus grant targeted at helping homeless persons transition into permanent housing.  Through the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing (HPRP) grant, Our House has helped 40 families move into their own homes by providing more than $143,000 in assistance with rent, utilities, and deposits.  Our HPRP program provided a stepping stone for these families to help ease the difficult move from homelessness to life on ...

Portia Jordan arrived in our shelter last fall. Back then, she did not have any clear goals or the ability to live independently. As a mother of two, she was trying her best to take care of her 2 year son, Tyrique and her 8 month old daughter Katelyn. Portia’s mother helped out sometimes by keeping the children in the evening so Portia could spend more time on job search. After some hard work, she was finally able to catch a break. From Poverty to Permanent Housing

Leah moved into her own apartment in April 2010 after a ten-month residence at Our House Shelter. Through the HPRP program Leah received assistance with her utility deposit for electricity and full rental assistance for three months. Leah was able to move into a neighborhood that is walking distance to her son's school and very near her job. Leah also re-enrolled at Philander Smith College where she is studying biology with the intention of graduating in 2011. Upon graduation, Leah hopes to ...
