Leah moved into her own apartment in April 2010 after a ten-month residence at Our House Shelter. Through the HPRP program Leah received assistance with her utility deposit for electricity and full rental assistance for three months. Leah was able to move into a neighborhood that is walking distance to her son's school and very near her job. Amanda Simpson and her 1-year-old daughter Alynnea have lived at the Our House Shelter for one year. Amanda’s story of how she came to Our House is unfortunately not a unique one; she got out of an abusive relationship with her daughter's father, moved into a battered women’s shelter, and eventually ended up at the Our House Shelter. LaShondra Newsom is a single mother of four. LaShondra and her 3 boys Ka'Shaun, 6, Zion, 4, and Sammuel, 1 and daughter Paradyce, 9 share a unit in the Family Housing program. Paradyce suffers from severe allergies and asthma attacks, attacks that can send her to the hospital. Prior to coming into Our House, they were living in an apartment that had mold and other things that triggered her asthma attacks.
