About Our House Our Mission (Top )
Our House provides the working homeless (families and individuals) with safe, clean, comfortable housing; food; free child care; education; and job training in order that they may return to independence and lead productive lives.

What We Do (Top )

Our House operates an 80-bed shelter, a 39-bed family housing program (18 family rooms), an education and job training center, a free childcare center, and a feeding program that serves over 45,000 meals per year. Our House also offers additional free services that help people transform their lives. Services include addiction recovery groups, after school programs, parenting classes and job search assistance. Our House programs help people become successful members of the workforce, the community, and their own families.

Our House is Located in Little Rock, Arkansas (Top )

Our House is located at 302 East Roosevelt Road near I-30 in Central Little Rock. Our House serves the entire state of Arkansas. Residents and program participants come from all parts of the state to access the comprehensive services provided by Our House. Our House is located on a four-acre plot of land near the old VA Hospital. The Our House campus includes four buildings, a playground, and green space.

Our House History (Top )

Our House was incorporated in September of 1987 following two years of study into the ever-growing problems of the homeless in Central Arkansas. The study, which was conducted by the Arkansas Conference of Churches and Synagogues (the Arkansas Interfaith Conference), the United Way of Pulaski County, and other interested community agencies, determined that the greatest need was to find shelter for homeless families. Two shelters in Little Rock offered only short-term stays for individuals, with no place for families to stay together and no assistance with long-term needs and planning. Our House set out to fill this gap and to meet the needs of Central Arkansas's working homeless population.

Over the last 20 years, Our House has grown from a single, 40-bed emergency shelter to a comprehensive program to transition people from homelessness into the workforce and permanent, independent housing.

On December 17, 2005 Our House, Inc. moved its main shelter from 408 Main Street to 302 East Roosevelt. Through this move, Our House was able to consolidate all programs to one campus. This move makes it much easier for the homeless residents of the main shelter to participate in the computer training, GED and literacy programs offered by Our House at the Joseph Flaherty Campus (on Roosevelt). A family housing program and a free daycare for homeless children are also located on this campus. Through the new shelter, Our House is able to provide crucial services to nearly twice as many people as in the previous year.

Recognition as a National Model (Top )

The Our House model has been replicated across the country in 39 states and throughout Arkansas. Most recently, Our House was selected an Arkansas Business Nonprofit of the Year finalist for 2007.

In 2006, several groups -- including a group from Helena/West Helena -- toured the Our House facilities and learned about our programs with the hopes of replicating it to meet their community's homeless needs.

Our House has received considerable national recognition as a model program. On November 2, 1990, President George Bush wrote, 'I was delighted to learn of your outstanding work in behalf of your community. Your generosity and willingness to serve others merit the highest praise, and I am pleased to recognize you at the 290th 'Daily Point of Light.''

In September 1992, HUD Secretary Jack Kemp and Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Lewis Sullivan presented Our House with the National Interagency Council on the Homeless Community Service Excellence Award.

The Wall Street Journal featured Our House in a front page article on May 17, 1993 and cited our programs as examples for the rest of the nation to follow.

President Bill Clinton, in June 1993, wrote, 'Programs such as yours (Our House) that emphasize job training and job placement as a means of helping our neediest citizens and stopping welfare dependency can enhance the quality of living for many Americans. Keep up the good work.'

In recent years, Our House has received awards from United Way; the State of Arkansas (presented by Governor Mike Huckabee); the Arkansas Hunger Coalition and FASTEN (Faith and Service Technical Education Network).
